Iran Drone Strikes Hit 3 AWS Data Centers — AI Infrastructure Becomes Military Target

In early March 2026, Iran launched drone or missile strikes on three Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. The attacks caused physical damage to the facilities and led to widespread service outages affecting banking, payment systems, delivery apps, and enterprise software across the Middle East.

Iran claimed it deliberately targeted the data centers, alleging they supported U.S. military and intelligence activities. Experts suggest this may be the first instance in history of data centers being targeted as military objectives in armed conflict, highlighting the vulnerability of physical infrastructure as AI becomes increasingly strategically important.

This incident clearly demonstrates that cloud infrastructure is not immune to geopolitical risks. The importance of physical security, redundancy, and business continuity planning for data centers in conflict zones is now being questioned across the entire industry. Additionally, submarine cables passing through the Red Sea are also located in conflict zones, raising concerns about chokepoint risks in data communications.

For Amazon, the Middle East represents a growth market for cloud services, and these attacks could significantly impact the company's regional strategy. From a broader perspective, as AI is increasingly recognized as a strategic national security asset, the risk of data centers and network infrastructure supporting AI becoming military targets has become a reality. Going forward, technology companies will be compelled to incorporate geopolitical risk into their infrastructure design.
