Google Invests Additional $300M in Anthropic for 10% Stake, Intensifying AI Race
Google invests an additional $300 million in Anthropic, securing approximately 10% stake, as the AI arms race between tech giants intensifies.
Google has made a significant strategic move in the escalating AI race by investing approximately $300 million in Anthropic, an AI safety and research company, securing a stake of around 10% in the startup. The deal reportedly values Anthropic at roughly $5 billion. This partnership provides Anthropic not only with substantial financial backing but also with critical cloud computing power from Google Cloud needed to develop and scale its AI models.
Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former senior members of OpenAI including CEO Dario Amodei, distinguishes itself with a strong emphasis on AI safety. The company is developing its AI chatbot Claude, trained using 'Constitutional AI,' a method designed to ensure AI systems are harmless and helpful by following natural language principles.
In a statement regarding the partnership, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said, 'We're partnering with Google Cloud to support the next phase of Anthropic, where we're going to deploy our AI systems to a larger set of people. This partnership gives us the cloud infrastructure performance and scale we need.' He further emphasized their goal to 'build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems' using Google's infrastructure.
This investment is widely seen as Google's countermove to Microsoft's deep alliance with OpenAI. Microsoft has committed to investing $10 billion in OpenAI and is integrating OpenAI's technology across its product line, including its Bing search engine, posing a direct challenge to Google's long-standing dominance in search. The formation of two clear power blocs — Google-Anthropic versus Microsoft-OpenAI — signals the intensifying competition for AI supremacy among tech giants.
